Our Philosophy

We welcome you to the Eleon Spa, a place of euphoria, relaxation and well being. Our philosophy is to combine the healing qualities of olive which circumscribes us, with traditional and modern methods and with treating procedures. But first, let’s make a brief reference to the history and characteristics of this miraculous and sacred plant.

According to mythology, olive’s cultivation was brought to Greece by goddess Athena. The first sacred tree she granted to the Athenians was being guarded at the Acropolis, whereas other 12 sacred olive trees and the olive grove, which provided the oil awarded as a prize to the winners of  the Panathenean Games, were at the Academia. Another tradition has mentioned that Hercules’s bludgeon was made of wild olive’s wood, while the winners of the Olympic Games were crowned with wild olive wreaths.

Olive oil was being used during antiquity for its healing properties. More than 60 pharmaceutical uses are mentioned in the Hippocratic Corpus. It was suitable for the treatment of skin diseases, as cicatricial and antiseptic for wounds, burns and gynaecological diseases. Possibly, it served as a mean of contraception, as well. It was also being used as an emetic and as a medicine for aural problems.

As a nourishing factor, it prevents heart diseases. Besides oil, the leaves and flowers of olive tree were used for their medicinal properties as well; people made decoctions based on them, which they used as collyrium for the inflammation of the gums and gastric ulcer.

Olive leaves contain several phenolic compounds, with oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol being the most important among them. The effects of olive tree leaves are mainly attributed to those 2 substances. Briefly, the benefits of olive leaves consumption (juice, decoction, olive oil) are listed as follows:

  • Immune system enhancement
  • Antioxidant action
  • Antihypertensive action
  • Prevention of platelets’ aggregation/blood coagulation (antithrombotic)
  • Energy levels’ increase – Combat of chronic fatigue
